Category: Getting to Know You
Hey!
I'm curious: Have any of you, for whatever reasons, lied about how you lost your sight, and if so, what are the best/most creative ones you've used?
I once told a girl I was a drummer in a band, and was blinded in the chaos of a mob of unruly, awe-struck fans.
no, i don't see any reason to. i don't make it known, but i certainly don't hide it. people see me using my cane all the time, sooo...
same here, what's the point in lying?
you've got it, so live with it
LOL Jim, very creative. When I had enough vision to "pass" I did try to keep some people from knowing that I had a vision problem. But now that I'm total, I've never thought about lying about how I lost my vision. But it's an interesting concept to think about.
BTW, did the girl buy your story?
Becky:
Sadly, she did. LOL.
Hmm. Good question. I never had very good eyesight. I think as it was decreasing, I tried to bluff my way through like it wasn't. I came to realize this, and would share it with my clients who were loosing their vision, that there comes a time when its more awkward and stupid-looking to bluff your way through than to just be up front about your sight loss. Obviously, I wouldn't say they were stupid-looking even though I might think so. My job is to build trust, and not eliminate it. Good topic, Jim.

Never lied about it, never seen any point, but am impressed at your inventiveness jim. my favourite though is when I'm asked if I've always been blind, and I answer, no, not yet. lol
lol, i have, and am, big time, and i shouldn't really be saying this, but... .. here goes.
When I was 11, a 3 year old kid hit me in my good eye with his car seat belt on the school bus. Lol, I didn't want to get him in trouble, or have to maybe go to court, so I told my family I tripped and stuff at school. Lol, and they still believe it. Now, top that one.
Why lie about it? I mean what's the point?
Troy
well, you may have reasons, even stupid ones.
My reason was, I didn't want any trouble, and now, I don't want to get bitched at for telling the truth, and it doesn't matter, and it was for the best at the time I thought.
I've never lied about my blindness. A person either likes me for who I am, and if they can't deal with the fact that i'm blind, then i don't need them.
wonderwoman
No it's impossible to hide after all
No, I'm not very good at lying, well at making up things about myself or tricking people. But even if I could, I wouldn't see the point of it, as then if someone asked other questions about it, I'd have to think of answers for those questions as well. I do like the stories mentioned here though by those who have. *smile*
In the past, I've been forced to lie about how I lost my eyesight. Whenever I tell people the truth, it either scares them away or they get a wrong idea about me. The only other person I've met who lied about how he became blind was a guy who attempted suicide.
I lied once by saying I was nine when I lost my sight, and in reality I as born blind. I guess I was ashamed, or something.
I think you guys might be considering this too seriously. Many a time I've been in a cab with a driver who had a very minimal grasp of the english language. and 9 times out of 10, the subject comes up. so, you always be blind? or why you not see, or lose your vision? And No i've not yet invented some miraculous story, and will no doubt continue to regurgitate the i was born with it, its a genetic condition tale. *grin
I would never dream of lying about a topic that can be very sensitive for some people. To me, it's wrong. If people can't accept me for who I am without questions, I don't talk to them.
In college I once told a girl I was blinded in the Vietnam war.
She was "oh so sorry" and I thought it was funny at first, but she told her roommate, and they started asking questions, and I finally admitted the truth.
Just blasé born blind. They were both pissed at first then we all laughed at it.
I think that's the only time.

Mine was caused by a "birth defect"; I've used the term "engineering decision" a time or two. Thought it would make a more interesting story.
Just now, I've realized that my last post could have been taken the wrong way. It's not that I'm unwilling to answer questions, or that I'm sensitive about my lack of vision. I'd find it difficult to lie about this subject. So, that's that.
I have lied a few times. I used to say I lost my eyesight because I was abducted by aliens and they did an experiment on me that failed. I only did that once though. I told a few people I caused a riot and I went blind when someone threw someth1ng at me.
I lied because I was being smart, and I didn't believe in aliens back then.
Do you believe in them now?
what usually happens is i don't bring it up right awzy because i have people call me a lier and don't talk to me ever again..what the hell is sighted people's problem!isn't it supposed to be blind people that are the ones that are blind deaf and dumb?
